Shaken, not stirred

She said: In honor of this morning's (11:42am PST) 5.4 earthquake (my first in LA!), I've asked the barkeep at our Tuesday-frequented bar, Mandrake, to whip us up an Earthquake cocktail tonight.  We'll see if it's tasty.

Apparently the Earthquake, also known as the Tremblement du Terre, was invented on the early side of the turn of the (last) century by Toulouse-Lautrec.  Originally made with Absinthe, now it's most often made with Pernod.

Recipe (HT: Wikipedia) goes as follows:

--1 part gin

--1 part bourbon

--1 part Absinthe/Pernod/licorice liquor

Shake in cocktail shaker with ice. Serve over ice cubes in a collins glass.

Update: so the bartender made the cocktail, and it's, um, shall I say....a little like cauterizing your mouth, then drinking draino and then novacaine. Okay, maybe that's an exaggeration. It's more like stuffing your face full of black jelly beans on Easter morning and then downing a bottle of bourbon. Sign up if you think you can take it. To be fair, though, the bartender was a great sport and didn't even charge me for it since it was an experiment. (Oh, and apparently Toulouse-Lautrec was an alcoholic. Who else would drink it?) And then, a homeless guy who got out of jail today stumbled into the bar, convinced us to buy him a beer, and then drank the rest of the Earthquake. For reals.

Oh, and it's a little bit better when mellowed out with a little seltzer water.
